Too Much Vibrato Not Enough How to Control Your Voice Suzy S. Is there such a thing as too much vibrato? Find out about the technique in this guest post by Brooklyn, NY singing teacher Liz T... Have you ever listened to a professional opera or Broadway singer  and noticed how strong their vibrato was? Or noticed how a lot of contemporary pop singers on the radio today do not use a lot of vibrato? In this article, I will explain how to find and control your vibrato to use appropriately when performing. What is Vibrato? To begin with, a simple definition of a vocal vibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression, and can be characterized by the amount of pitch variation and the speed within the pitch that is varied. Listen to the clip below to hear Liza Minnellis interpretation of vibrato: Opera and Broadway are two common musical styles in which vibrato is used. Singers such as Ethel Merman, Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Maria Callas, and Renée Fleming are all excellent singers to listen to for examples. Vibratos usually come into play at the very end of a powerful line or phrase, or at the end of the song to make it more dramatic. Vibrato is created by belting, and making the “word” of the note you are singing sound longer. Some songs are written perfectly for the use of a vibrato. Take for example, the classic song “Don’t Rain on My Parade”, below: This song has strong, powerful, melodic lines with held notes at the end of each phrase, especially near the end of the song (2:40 to the end). By adding a little vibrato, this is going to help you hold the note longer! For singers who are just experimenting singing opera and Broadway, it’s important to begin by finding your vibrato. If you sing these songs completely without vibrato, the style is going to sound very different to the ear. These styles are are meant to sound dramatic and powerful, and without the use of vibrato, the song is going to be lacking in musicality. Now, please note when singing in these genres, there is such a thing as singing with too much vibrato, as well as not enough. When you are singing in these genres, there is no need to add it all the time, really only at the end of phrases to create a dramatic effect. If you start out the song automatically punching out vibrato, it’s going to sound alarming to the listener! On the flip side, there is such a thing as not using enough vibrato. Do Other Genres Use Vibrato? In pop, rock, RB, and country music, you need to have more of a balance of using your vibrato. Not to say you will never use it in these styles, but it’s not what makes these styles work. Riffs, improv, yodels, and a high mix, for example, are things that make these song work. To get a feel for when vibrato does work in these genres, listen to the clips below of Beyonce and Christina Aguilera, two singers who use good vibrato technique. For some singers vibrato may come naturally, while others will really need to work on developing and feeling comfortable using vibrato. My advice to singers is start exploring vibrato by listening to great singers who use vibrato and others who dont, in the specific styles that I mentioned, and to practice belting to some songs that have a great potential for vibrato. Adding specific vibrato exercises, like this one demonstrated by  Jacob O. Nygaard, will also help.  Just remember to control and balance your vibrato, no matter what song you’re singing! Define Osmotic Pressure Online Biology Tutors Tutorpace The movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane is called osmosis. The direction and rate of osmosis depend on the pressure gradient and concentration gradient. The osmotic pressure can be defined as the actual hydrostatic pressure (pressure related to water) which develops in a solution due to the presence of dissolved solutes when it is separated from pure water by means of a semipermeable membrane. The magnitude of the osmotic pressure is a function of solute concentration in a solution. It is higher in the case of xerophytes as compared to mesophytes while mesophytes have higher osmotic pressure than hydrophytes. It is also noted that an isolated solution without solute, and not bounded by any membrane, has no osmotic pressure. This negative osmotic pressure is called osmotic potential. For the development of osmotic pressure a confined space is required. Numerically osmotic pressure is equivalent to the osmotic potential, but the sign is opposite. Osmotic pressure is the positive pressure applied, while osmotic potential is negative. Example the function of solute concentration in a solution is the magnitude of osmotic potential. Such a solution has an osmotic potential which is a negative of osmotic pressure.

8 Things to Consider When Creating a Study Schedule for the MCAT MCAT Medical School Admissions The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is one of the most challenging graduate school entry exams. While the content and strategy is difficult, it is essential for students to focus on planning when preparing for this lengthy exam. A successful MCAT preparation begins with creating a study schedule that manages to accommodate your other commitments while meeting your preparation needs. Here are eight tips to assist you in preparing your own study schedule for the exam: 1. Consider when you want toapply and begin medical school With 50+ hours of prerequisite courses and a year-long process for applying to medical school, planning for the MCAT can be daunting. There are two ways of approaching this based on what type of student you are: Traditional Students: Traditional students are those who plan to finish college in four years and start medical school the fall after graduation. Typically, traditional students finish their prerequisite courses by spring of their Sophomore year and schedule their test during their junior year. This allows them enough time to take the MCAT twice (if needed) prior to May, when applications open. Nontraditional students: A nontraditional student is anyone who does not fall under the category above. These students tend to struggle scheduling their MCAT because their timeline is not as strictly defined. In order to apply, you will need a score report for your MCAT prior to May of the year of application (e.g. If you want to matriculate in Fall 2018, you will need to take your tes t no later than April 2017 so that you receive a score report by May of 2017, when applications open). Also, keep in mind that you may want to retake the exam and should plan for a retake just in case your score does not match your goal. 2. Evaluate if you are prepared to begin studying for the MCAT Before deciding to take the MCAT you should have completed ALL your prerequisite courses. While some may advise that you can ‘self-teach’, most students struggle with this and see severe deficiencies on their score reports.Evaluate what events are coming up in your life in the next six months. Work, personal, or school events can drastically affect your study schedule. When setting up your study schedule, factor in birthdays, weddings, exams and other major events so that you do not overbook your study schedule. Make sure to leave yourself some wiggle room when planning your study schedule. Most students have some bumps along the way studying. Whether it’s the flu or car trouble, make sure you leave yourself some buffer time to deal with regular life. 3. Register for your test as early as possible and set a score goal Test registration fees increase closer to your testing date, while site availability decreases. Be sure to register early so that you can plan for your test date. In addition, use this as a motivator throughout your study plan by counting down the days. Research medical schools and note their median scores for matriculants. Set your target score slightly above the median score of schools that you would like to attend. 4. Your study schedule should be about 100 days Each student will vary in how much time they need to prepare for the MCAT. In general, a minimum of 100 days is sufficient to review the material and take a variety of practice passages and exams. Your preparation should consist of about 60% content review and 40% strategy and testing. 5. Invest in a variety of practice materials A common mistake students make when preparing for the exam is using one brand of test preparation materials. While this seems ideal since the materials usually integrate well, it also leaves the student vulnerable to a few common problems.1) Students often develop a bias towards how they approach test questions and become used to that style of writing and questioning. When the structure of questions or passages varies, they tend to not score as well. 2) While every test preparation company does their best to review all the content, they may miss some topics or not explain them in a way that resounds with the student. This is where students benefit from a variety of content review books, practice passages, and exams. In addition, reading multiple test preparation sources with the same content will reinforce the content through repetition. 6. Invest in a planner that breaks down your day into hours, days, weeks, and months Most pre-medical students are overachievers and lead extremely busy lives. Given this type of lifestyle, it is easy to lose track of how a day, week, or even a month is spent. Studying for the MCAT is like training for a marathon, every session counts towards your long-term goal. Using a planner that breaks down your time allows you to track your short-term study habits, while also keeping track of your long-term goal for your exam. Ideally, you should be tracking how many hours you study per day while noting how much you can accomplish during that time frame. 7. Evaluate and adjust your study schedule. Track your progress Use your planner to evaluate whether you are sticking to your study schedule and meeting your goals. This will allow you to assess whether you need to change study habits, environment, or lessen commitments. In addition to a planner, an excel sheet or notebook tracking passage and exam results is a useful tool to measure progress. This will allow you to assess whether you are on track to meet your target score and what areas of content are weak. 8. Beware of burnout and don’t be afraid to alter your plans or test date While studying for the MCAT can be all consuming, it is important to balance the exam. With a 100-day study schedule, you should be able to take at least one day a week off from studying and testing. Breaks allow you to refresh and remember why you are studying for such an arduous exam.As you approach your test date, it is normal to consider rescheduling your exam if you are not meeting your score goals or are behind on your study schedule. You can reschedule your exam up until 1 month prior to your test. Relax and take the time you need to do well; you will be glad you did!

Why your school needs employer branding and how to get started Feel like hiring teachers is a bit of a slog these days? Well, better get ready for how much harder it will be in a few years. New international teaching jobs are emerging in their droves, the pool of qualified teachers is dwindling year over year and competition for qualified international educators is getting more and more intense. When it comes to recruiting today’s teachers, doing things the way you do, mainly because that’s how they’ve always been done, is no longer enough. These guys have lots of options to choose from and that’s not going to change any time soon. So, what’s the secret sauce to thriving in a tricky hiring landscape, like the one we’re facing right now? It’s employer branding. It’s fair to say that there’s a whole load of HR buzzwords floating around these days. But employer branding is a fairly simple concept, and it’s been around in some shape or form since hiring people became a thing: What is it about your school that makes teachers want to work there in the first place? The best teachers aren’t going to fall into your lap without you doing a good job at identifying, communicating and managing your employer brand. So let’s cover some key areas to focus on when you’re thinking about building your employer brand (we promise, getting started is easier than you think!) 1. Create candidate personas Maybe you’ve never heard marketing chatter about buyer personas (lucky you!) Let’s break it down quickly: Personas are research and data-driven insights and characteristics of your target audience (in this case, your dream teachers). Creating candidate personas is the first step towards a) understanding who your ideal candidates really are and b) figuring out ways to differentiate your school from others in your region. So survey your current teachers, what do they like about your school? Find any external research on your target candidates, like Teach Away’s 2018 survey of 12,618 international teaching candidates - a bit of research will go a long way in helping you develop a thorough candidate persona. Candidate personas are especially useful to have on hand when you’re thinking about creating relevant recruitment content - that way you can ensure you’re putting messaging out there that’s attracting the right teachers for you. It stands to reason, for example, that highly experienced teachers with families will prioritize different things in a job than a single, fresh education grad, so you’ll need a different approach for each type. The benefits there are twofold - you can also stop wasting time attracting candidates who may not be qualified or a good cultural fit for the positions you’re hiring for. 2. Audit your careers page/job posting Take a nosey at your careers pages (whether on your school website or a third-party hiring platform) and your job postings. Is it easy to navigate and find the info candidates want to know about a prospective school, such as the career progression and PD opportunities you offer, what the salary and perks are like, etc.? If you’re a school that puts time into your teachers’ professional development and growth, don’t keep it a secret - candidates really care about that stuff. Are you following the “show, don’t tell” philosophy, featuring testimonials or videos from any employee advocates that spotlight what makes your school the place to be? Don’t let the lack of video skills hold you back on this front - a minute-long video previewing what the job’s really like from the perspective of real teachers at your school can be done on the cheap and even shot on a mobile, using free editing software like iMovie. Other fundamental things to look out for: Are your jobs and careers page mobile friendly? Are your job postings insightful enough to help candidates screen themselves in or out, depending on any make-or-break factors? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself when reviewing your current recruitment content. 3. Assess your hiring strategy Which channels are you currently using you showcase your school? Are you missing any key ones? This isn’t just about ensuring you’re allocating your recruitment budget in the right places (although that’s a nice added perk). In 2019, your employer brand has to extend beyond your school website. It needs to be brought to life on education job boards and Google - as the top online methods of sourcing jobs, these are the channels that will help amplify your employer branding efforts. 4. Evaluate your candidate experience 91% of candidates agree that your hiring process has a significant impact on how favorably they view your school as a potential employer. So what does you’re current existing hiring process look like, from application through to the interview and job offer (or rejection)? You’ll want to create a clearly defined (and trackable) process so that you can be more efficient and evaluate what’s working well and what you could improve on. Take a look at your current recruiting tools, as well - is your applicant tracking system helping you automate certain tasks and free up resources that can be better spent on sealing the deal with the perfect candidates? 5. Benchmark yourself against other schools Now that you’ve taken a long, hard look at yourself, it’s time to research other international schools in your region to see how good (or bad) of a job they’re doing with their own employer brand strategy. Check out their careers page, job postings and see what you can find out about their hiring process. This is a great way to get some inspiration for your own employer brand and pinpoint ways you can differentiate your school from the crowd. There’s no international school on the planet that won’t benefit from using employer branding to help attract and hire the best teachers. But much like Rome, a great employer brand isn’t built in a day. By starting with these steps I’ve covered above, however, you’ll go a long way in shaping a positive narrative around your school and becoming - and staying - an employer of choice for great educators the world over.
